How to Choose Kitchen Appliances That Last

Before you compare models, compare categories. How to judge build, serviceability, running costs and guarantees on any kitchen appliance in the UK.

Kitchen appliances are bought on features and lost on components. The specification sheet talks about programmes, capacities and finishes; the machine dies years later because of a bearing, a pump, a hinge or a control board that could not be reached without dismantling the case.

This guide is the entry point to our Home & Kitchen coverage. It recommends no models — we hold no verified comparison data for any appliance category. What it gives you is a way of interrogating any appliance, from a kettle to a fitted dishwasher, that survives the arrival of next year's range.

Decide the duty cycle before the feature list

Duty cycle is how hard a machine works and how often. A dishwasher run twice a day in a household of five does roughly four times the work of one run every other evening, and the components that wear are wearing four times as fast. Manufacturers design to an assumed duty cycle, and the price tiers within a range often reflect that assumption rather than the visible features.

Write down three numbers before you look at anything: how many times a week you will use it, the largest single load you actually need, and how long you intend to keep it. Sizing for your busiest imaginable week is the most common and most expensive error — it buys capacity you pay to heat, house and eventually dispose of. Sizing for your median week and accepting two runs occasionally is usually cheaper across the ownership period.

Motors, bearings and the parts that actually fail

In any appliance with a motor, the failure points are predictable: the motor itself, its bearings, the drive coupling, the pump, and the seals that keep water where it belongs. Brushed motors have carbon brushes that wear and, on better designs, can be replaced. Brushless motors remove that wear point and usually cost more upfront. Belt drives are cheap to replace but need access; direct drive removes the belt and moves the load onto the bearings.

Heat is the other reliable killer. Where heating elements, electronics and steam share a cabinet, ventilation and separation matter more than wattage. Control boards fail from thermal cycling as often as from voltage, and are frequently the most expensive single part.

On the listing, look for the motor type and whether the drive is direct or belted; whether the drum or tank is stainless steel or plastic; whether seals are replaceable items or bonded into an assembly; and the weight. Weight is a crude but honest proxy — cast components, counterweights and metal housings all announce themselves on the scales, and it is one of the physical facts discussed in how to judge product quality online.

Serviceability: can it be opened and fixed?

An appliance is only as durable as its cheapest irreplaceable part. Serviceability is a specification in its own right, even though almost nobody publishes it as one.

Three questions answer most of it. Can the case be opened with ordinary tools, or is it glued and clipped? Are parts sold individually — a pump, a hinge, a seal — or only as assemblies costing half the price of the machine? And are those parts sold to owners, or only to registered technicians?

GB rules help here. Under the Ecodesign for Energy-Related Products and Energy Information Regulations 2021, manufacturers of several household categories — washing machines and washer-dryers, dishwashers, refrigeration and electronic displays among them — must make defined spare parts available for a set period after the last unit of a model is placed on the market: ten years for washing machines and washer-dryers, seven for some other categories. Most parts need only go to professional repairers, with a shorter list, such as door hinges and seals, available to owners directly. Parts must be replaceable with commonly available tools without damaging the machine, and orders delivered within 15 working days. The rules apply to Great Britain; equivalent EU requirements apply in Northern Ireland.

Before buying, search the model number with the part you expect to fail. An established parts market with named components and a service manual is the strongest durability signal a listing never gives you. The full method is in appliance repairability and spare parts.

Noise, vibration and where they come from

Noise is a design outcome, not a feature. It comes from motor type, bearing quality, insulation mass and how well the machine is balanced and mounted. Labels for several appliance types state a figure in decibels, sometimes with a noise class, measured under standardised conditions — comparable between machines, and not comparable with what you will hear in a small kitchen with hard floors.

Two things are worth knowing. Decibels are logarithmic, so a difference of ten roughly halves or doubles perceived loudness, while three decibels is real but modest. And frequency matters more than level in an open-plan room: a low hum carries through walls where a higher-pitched whirr does not.

Vibration is the same problem from another angle, and is usually an installation issue as much as a design one. Machines that are not level, or that sit on a floating floor, transmit far more than their rating suggests.

Running costs over a realistic lifespan

Purchase price is the smallest of the numbers on a long-lived appliance. Energy, water, consumables such as filters and descaler, and the occasional repair usually add up to more than the sticker across a decade.

Two habits keep the arithmetic honest. Use the energy label class as a comparison tool but not a bill forecast: label figures come from standardised programmes, typically low-temperature eco cycles, and most households run something faster and hotter. And price the consumables before you buy — a machine tied to proprietary filters or pods can cost more per year in supplies than in electricity. Guarantees and what the length signals

A guarantee is a commercial promise, and its length is priced. A manufacturer offering five or ten years has modelled its failure rate and decided it can afford the claims — genuine information about expected reliability.

Read the scope, though, because guarantees narrow in predictable ways. Cover may apply to the motor only, or exclude the parts that actually fail. It may require online registration within a window, annual servicing, or branded consumables. It may cover parts but not labour after the first year, which on a fitted appliance is most of the cost. And a guarantee sits on top of your statutory rights against the retailer rather than replacing them — a distinction that matters most when a machine fails in year three.

Features that earn their place vs features that add failure points

Usually worth it: a genuinely useful capacity step; better insulation; stainless internals; an accessible filter; a simple mechanical control that cannot lose firmware support; a quieter motor class in an open-plan kitchen.

Usually not: programme counts in the twenties; touch panels replacing switches; app connectivity on an appliance that will outlive the app; internal lighting effects; finishes that show every mark. The test is simple: for each feature, ask what breaks if it fails. If the answer is "the whole machine stops", it needs to be earning its place.

Fitting, plumbing and installation traps

More appliance returns are caused by measurement than by manufacturing. Before ordering, check the aperture height, width and depth including the plinth; the door swing and clearance to an island or opposite run; hinge type and whether the door can be reversed; the route from the front door to the kitchen, including turns and bannisters; and the position of socket, waste and water feed relative to the appliance's own connection points.

Then check the services. Older properties may have flow rates, isolation valves or waste positions that suit some machines and not others; some appliances need a dedicated circuit. Confirm whether delivery includes installation, removal of the old unit and disconnection — and what the retailer's policy is if the appliance will not fit. A change-of-mind cancellation is far easier to exercise before an appliance has been plumbed in than after.

Frequently asked questions

Is a longer guarantee a reliable sign of a better appliance?

It is a useful signal rather than proof. A long guarantee means the manufacturer has priced its expected failure rate and is confident. Check the scope: cover limited to the motor, or conditional on registration and annual servicing, is a narrower promise than it looks.

Are more programmes and settings worth paying for?

Rarely. Most households use two or three. Extra modes generally add electronics and touch interfaces rather than mechanical capability, and control boards are among the more expensive parts to replace.

How long should a kitchen appliance last?

It depends on duty cycle and category more than price. What matters when something fails early is that UK law judges durability against what is reasonable for that type of product, so a documented early failure is a claim worth making rather than bad luck to absorb.

Can I check whether spare parts will be available?

Often. For several household categories, GB ecodesign rules require defined spare parts to be available for seven to ten years after a model was last placed on the market, though most parts go to professional repairers rather than owners. Search the model number alongside the part you expect to fail.

Is it worth buying built-in rather than freestanding?

Built-in suits a fitted kitchen but ties you to specific dimensions and often to a fitter at replacement time. Freestanding machines are cheaper to swap and easier to sell on. Decide on how long you expect to keep the kitchen, not the appliance.
